Fong Yuan, originally known as Hulu Dun (Calabash Mound), was once covered with pines and cypresses. The aborigines called it Taiye’er Mound(pines and cypresses hill).A legend once told that there were three knolls between downtown Taichung and Xia-Nan-Keng, and the shape of the knolls looked liked like a calabash, an auspicious symbol of abundance; hence, the place earned the name, Hulu Dun. The work is a composition of calabashes, clouds and rainbows. Fong Yuan Junior High School is the base and cradle of talent cultivation. Like birds taking flight, talented graduates from the school bring the Hulu Dun hopes and promise of a beautiful future.
