This work uses semiotic image management to combine the glorious history of the army’s 234th Mechanized Infantry Brigade with the “public nature of art” and crafts an image of a modernized elite fighting force. In the Art of War Sun Zi writes:“Do not rely on the likelihood of the enemy not coming, but rather rely on one’s own readiness to receive him.” The key to being able to plan victory from a thousand miles away is to devise a strategy before fighting starts. To that end, this work employs carefully deliberated military simulations, advancing and entrenching gradually, through the use of street furniture and a chess board that create a spatial environment. At the same time, the unit’s camouflage is decorated with chess pieces, so through the visual sensation and imagination of viewers colors hidden in the environment engage in a dialogue with the location.
